A picture is worth a 1000 words, so I'll let this one do the speaking: this is the view from the front porch of the Delaney House, showing the old foundation.
This weekend, it was incredibly hot - just in time for the weekend when we planned to demolish the old foundation, using sledge hammers and a jackhammer. We spent several hours at the Delaney House on Saturday, in the intense heat, breaking up the old foundation. But today, we decided that it was too hot, so we stayed home. We'll finish the work next weekend, if it cools off.
did you do anything with the scrap from the old foundation? does this recycle into anything? yard walls or anything?
ReplyDeleteWe do - in fact, we're kind of obsessive about reuse. We have saved all the bricks (from the foundation, and from the two chimneys) and plan to use them as garden beds and pathways. The concrete gets recycled - it gets crushed and reused as aggregate. All the wood siding has been saved and will be reused, and the framing will be used where it can be. The Cheney Cottage is a massive bit of recycling: keeping an entire house out of the landfill. The kitchen cabinets in both houses will be old ones we are recycling. We use old glass in the windows. We try to salvage and reuse everything.
